i see one or both of these guys almost every day on my way to or from work...
they are almost always on the 2 billboards south of the bridge, closest to the original nest..
they must like to winter there as it shelters them from the elements...
i can only assume it's the original pair, but with what is happening here lately, who knows..??

Maddy and Freedom are now incubating in a new location (Maddy's third different place in four nesting years). They are on the first bridge support on the east side of Canal Road. We went up on the east bank to get a look after we saw Freedom fly up there and go out of sight from down below.

Here's a pic from above-- you can see a build-up of broken concrete on the support with the pipes-- they are in front of the concrete mound in a depression. You can see the outline of his head to the right of the mound...

And here are some shots from last week when we pulled up and saw Freedom continuously diving over the field to the north of the bridge. We went over and saw that Freedom had a young redtail grounded and he was buzzing over him repeatedly...

And here he is diving down, ringing up, and diving again-- he darted past the redtail so fast that he was by him before the redtail could react...

The redtail flew, looked up as Freedom dove on him again and almost hit him as the redtail inverted to defend. He made it over to a nearby building...

And here Freedom buzzed by so close that the redtail lost his balance and fell off of the roof...

He ended up on the ground, but was able to make it up to a small tree by the building as Freedom returned to the bridge. In this first shot you can see the nictitating membrane covering his eye. After awhile the redtail flew off into the woods uninjured and with no further assault.
